Panofsky, Tomb Sculpture
In 1956 art historian Panofsky gave four incisive lectures at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University which were subsequently published (in 1964) accompanied by 446 black and white photos illustrative of the text. His subject is death, and his discourse draws on many adjacent disciplines (classical and oriental archaeology, Egyptology, the history of religion and superstition, philology, and several others).
